Low Impact
Voice
Aerobic exercises are popular today. They are usually done in two different styles: low
and high impact. During the high impact workouts, your feet may hit the floor hard and jar
your legs. However, during low impact times, contacts are gentle.
That's what you want to do with your voice, bring the vocal folds together gently during
talking. You can do this by talking
· quietly,
· in a breathy voice, and
· in a relaxed way.
The style of quiet, easy voicing keeps the vocal folds slightly apart and relaxed. It
helps with healing and muscle recovery and should be used whenever you talk. Remember, no
whispering. Whispering presses the vocal folds together tightly.
We will be practicing the low impact voice in therapy using easy and then more difficult
situations where you would use the low impact voice.
· Listen to your clinician model the low impact voice
· Practice using it
· Check your progress by listening to and analyzing you voice on a tape
recorder.
