FAQs: Skull Base Surgery FAQs

Dr. Spector has compiled a list of his most commonly asked questions and answers for patients. If you have a question that is not answered below, please call us to schedule an appointment.

  • Will the surgery affect my appearance or nasal function (i.e. breathing and smelling)?

This procedure typically does not cause facial swelling, bruising or other changes in facial appearance. Typically the nasal airway is maintained or even enhanced. Though decreased nasal airflow and a diminished sense of smell may occur, this is generally not anticipated.

  •  What are the risks of surgery?

Your surgeons try very hard to accomplish their surgical goals while maintaining function and limiting complications. They will discuss what structures are encountered and how they best avoid or manage problems. Structures in the area include the nasal passages, sinuses, eyeballs, brain, blood vessels and various nerves.

  •  How long will I need to stay in the hospital?

This varies based upon the surgical site. However, most procedures require a 2-5 day hospital stay. Some patients may need to stay longer while others may be discharged and return home the day after surgery.

  • What will the recovery process be like? Will I have packing in my nose after the surgery?

Most patients are observed overnight in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Supportive medications will be available in the event of headaches, nausea or other post-operative concerns. Internal, dissoluble packing is standard with a minority of patients requiring removable packing.

  •  Will I need to see my ENT in the office after surgery?

Yes. You will be asked to see your ENT 1-2 weeks after surgery for the first of several post-operative visits. During the visits, your nose will be inspected and cleaned of any excess mucus or debris. This is done carefully and with consideration of patient comfort. Once the nasal passages are healed, no further cleaning is necessary. You will be asked to rinse your nose with saline solution (salt water) for several months after surgery.
