Sinusitis vs. A Cold: How to Spot the Differences

Sinusitis vs. A Cold: How to Spot the Differences

With all the allergens in the Central Florida air, it is easy to confuse that sneeze for a developing cold. Symptoms of a cold may sometimes seem similar to the effects of sinusitis, so how can you tell the difference?

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the result of sinus tissue becoming inflamed or swollen. When healthy, sinuses are filled with air; but when sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.

Typically, sinus blockage begins with a cold, but worsens as an infection develops. Typically, sinusitis is a chronic condition, affecting the individual multiple times throughout the year.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

  • Sinus Pressure
  • Congestion
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Sinus Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sore Throat
  • Tenderness/swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead

Treatment Options for Sinusitis

  • Balloon Sinuplasty
  • PROPEL Sinus Implant
  • Nasal decongestants (limited success)
  • Saline solution

About 37 million Americans suffer from at least one episode of sinusitis each year.

What is a Common Cold?

Generally mild in nature, the common cold is the result of a virus infection. There are more than 200 known to cause a cold. You catch this virus from someone else, usually by touching commonly used surfaces then touching your face or mouth.

The virus attaches itself to the lining of your throat or nose. Your immune system begins to attack the virus leading to fatigue and inflammation in the nose and throat, producing mucus.

Symptoms of a Common Cold

  • Sneezing
  • Runny Nose
  • Scratchy Throat
  • Stuffy Nose
  • Watery Eyes
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Mucus Drainage

Treatment Options for a Common Cold

  • Lots of rest (at least 12 hours a night)
  • Hydration
  • Tylenol or a similar acetaminophen to relieve pain
  • Over the counter cold medicines

According to the CDC, 22 million school days are lost annually in the U.S. because of the common cold.

Major Differences

So, how can you tell the difference? Cold symptoms – like watery eyes, a stuffy nose, and sneezing – generally subside within 10 days. If the sinuses have become infected, symptoms may be more severe and will last much longer.

The best thing you can do if you feel your sinus issue isn’t going away is to schedule an appointment with a local otolaryngologist to help you determine what the issue is and what the best treatment options may be.
