A deviated septum is one of the most common disorders of the nose. In fact, many of those individuals with a deviated septum can live their whole life unaware of it. A deviated septum can cause issues while sleeping or breathing, but can they actually cause allergies?
The nasal septum is made up of tissue running down the inside of the nasal cavity to separate the two airways of the nostrils. When an individual has a deviated septum, one nasal passage becomes larger and the other smaller in size.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology estimates that more than 80% of the population has a “crooked nasal bone” but never experience any noticeable symptoms. However, when the septum is severely off-centered, it is considered deviated. Those who suffer from allergies and have a deviated septum can have major difficulties. But this does not make them exactly the same. It is important to discuss allergies and treatment options with an Orlando ENT to obtain an official diagnosis and set up an effective treatment plan for managing symptoms.
Even though the conditions are different, for those who have allergies or a deviated septum, there are many similar symptoms.
For instance, both may have an adverse effect on the sinus cavities. When the body tries to fight off airborne allergens, the sinuses may become inflamed and the individual is likely to have some symptoms that resemble those of a common cold. A person who has a deviated septum can also have nasal swelling and increased mucus, leading to frequent sinus infections.
There are some distinct differences between allergies and the symptoms of a deviated septum. Allergies occur when the immune system becomes overactive. When this occurs, the body exhibits symptoms like a runny nose, sinus pressure, nasal congestion, or postnasal drip. In many cases, a deviated septum is the result of either a growing defect or some sort of facial injury.
Allergies can be treated with common medications where a deviated septum can only be corrected through surgical procedures. A deviated septum does not cause allergies, allergens trigger allergy attacks.
For those who have allergies, there can be some steps taken to avoid known triggers. By keeping a home clean, removing carpet, eliminating visible molds and staying inside during spring, many pollens and molds that trigger allergic reactions can be avoided. In this way a person can take a proactive stand to help prevent allergy related symptoms.
However, a deviated septum, which occurs as the result of a growth defect, cannot be prevented. Using the proper types of protective equipment when playing sports, and wearing the seat belt in a vehicle can keep the face protected, thus lowering the likelihood of sustaining an injury to the face and septum.
