What is Auditory Brainstem Response Testing?

What is Auditory Brainstem Response Testing?

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) test is used to determine the integrity of the auditory system and brain pathways for hearing. This test uses electrodes to measure the timing of waveforms elicited from the cochlea to the lower brainstem in response to clicks or tone bursts in the ear. The person being tested can rest quietly or even sleep while the test is performed as no response is necessary.

The primary purpose of auditory brainstem response testing is the following:

  • To estimate hearing thresholds
  • To assess the functional status of the auditory neural pathway
  • Newborn hearing screenings performed in a hospital setting

Who Will Perform the ABR Testing?

The testing will be performed by an audiologist, a specialist in evaluating and treating people with hearing loss. After the testing, the audiologist will interpret the results for the referring physician.

What Happens After an ABR Test?

The ABR test time will range from 45-60 minutes. The results will not be available immediately. After the audiologist interprets the results, it will be available to the referring physician for consultation.
