Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Resources You Need to See

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. This is becoming heavily apparent with the increase in news coverage about the transmission and increased incidence of HPV.

HPV has also been linked to a significant rise in certain cancers. Cervical cancer is the most common HPV-associated cancer among women, and oropharyngeal cancers (cancers of the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils) are the most common among men.

This link between HPV and cancer amplifies the urgency for screenings and vaccinations to anyone who may be at risk.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) By the Numbers

  • Incidence of HPV OSCC has increased by 225% from 1988 to 2004 from 0.8 to 2.6 cases per 100,000 population.
  • Each year, about 33,000 new cases of cancer are found in parts of the body where HPV is often found. HPV causes about 26,800 of these cancers.
  • Men have 3 times the risk of HPV infection than women.
  • The Center for Disease Control now recommends vaccination against HPV infection for both boys aged 9-21 and girls aged age 9 to 26.
